If you have never attended a concert, shows, events at the Hollywood Bowl, you are neglected a unique, inimitable and special musical experience. Luckily, having been born and raised in Los Angeles., I've been lucky enough to see handful incredible performances here including Coldplay, Norah Jones and Dave Matthews Band. This Los Angeles gem is one of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a current seating capacity of 17376. The Hollywood Bowl has been the summer home of the L.A. Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922.
Hollywood was a small town of only 5,000 people in 1910. By 1920 the growth of the movie industry had turned the community into a boom town with a population close to 50,000 and an identity all its own. Theatergoers, music and art lovers, nature buffs, politicians, real estate developers and civic boosters all agreed that an open-air theatre would be a great asset to the community.
The Hollywood Bowl is well known for its band shell, a distinctive set of concentric arches that has graced the site since 1929. Popular entertainers including Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, and Judy Garland have given famous or noteworthy performances under the shell. Cartoon buffs may see a resemblence between the concentric arches of the shell and Porky Pig's backdrop in Th-th-that's all, f-f-folks; it is debatable whether it was intentional (however, the Bowl did make appearances in various Warner Brothers cartoon shorts, and at least one DePatie-Freleng Pink Panther cartoon).
Every summer, Southern Californians congregate to the Hollywood Bowl for evenings of music and picnicking under the stars. Although the Hollywood Bowl is best known as a symphonic music venue, it has hosted a variety of events, from Hollywood High School's annual graduation ceremony to speeches by political leaders and dignitaries. Everyone from Vladimir Horowitz to the Beatles has played the Bowl. I just went again last summer and saw Garrison Keillor do Prairie Home Companion there (featuring Meryl Streep and Lucinda Williams!). The Bowl is really a fun & unique venue for lover of start and concerts.
Summer is finally in sight, and with the L.A. Philharmonic christening the season this month, the event is not only celebrating a climate change but a new swing of Hall of Famers. Rocking the Hollywood Bowl the 19th, Josh Groban and opera hit maker Dame Kiri Te Kanawa are joining the list of Hollywood Bowl's Hall of Fame that will also feature performances by The Who's Roger Daltrey, Beninese singer / songwriter Angelique Kidjo, mezzo- soprano Frederica von Stade and country music persona Tricia Yearwood. Groban and Kanawa are both inductees while Garth Brooks will present the two talented artists with the recognition; the country superstar was one of the Hall of Fame's original inductees from the first program started in 2000. '
The Hall of Fame is now part of a new exhibit on the main floor of the Hollywood Bowl Museum that includes photos and film of inductees over the years,' says a press release. The summer season will be immediately kick off as Groban, a Los Angeles native, and Kanawa are inducted into this legendary group.

That is one way of trying to shorten the 2011 season at the Hollywood Bowl, which will begin selling subscription series tickets.
Country diva Dolly Parton will make her Bowl debut on July 22 (with a July 23 encore), bringing 45 years' worth of Nashville hits and, no doubt, some killer fashion ensembles with her.
And Los Angeles Philharmonic music director Gustavo Dudamel (aka The Dude) will conduct five Bowl concerts in 2011, up from three last year. They'll include one of an all-Mozart concert (July 19) with violin soloist Gil Shaham; and a July 17 concert version of Puccini's 'Turandot,' the opera that made 'Nessun Dorma' nearly as ubiquitous in popular culture as the McDonald's jingle.
But in keeping with other Bowl traditions, like picnic hampers, fireworks and cruising Highland Avenue in search of that perfect secret parking spot, this summer's lineup at the iconic venue is a customarily unclassifiable mix of classical and jazz, pop and global rhythms, old hands and debutantes, the reassuringly familiar and the unexpected.
Several other artists with strong connections to the Bowl, the Phil and/or Los Angeles will show up under the arches this summer. Harry Connick Jr., along with other inductees still to be announced, will be ushered into the Bowl Hall of Fame on opening night, June 17.
Another returning FOB will be John Mauceri, the founder and longtime leader of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and now chancellor of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. He'll be conducting selections from 'Fantasia,' Walt Disney's landmark marriage of classical music and animation, accompanied by film clips on the Bowl's giant screens.
Further celebrating the ties that bind the Bowl artistically and topographically to the movie industry, Philip Glass will lead his ensemble in performing a new Phil-commissioned arrangement of the score for Godfrey Reggio's 1988 experimental documentary film, 'Powaqqatsi: Life in Transformation' (Aug. 30).
A staged version of the Tony Award-winning musical 'Hairspray' (Aug. 5, 6, 7) and singalongs to 'Grease' (June 24) and 'The Sound of Music' (Sept. 24) will aim to satisfy Broadway mavens.
The KCRW crowd are the children of this slightly amorphous figure,' Manocha said of Gainsbourg. 'He's a great artist with a great palette.'
